Dr. Doherty was born and raised in northeastern New Mexico on a working cattle ranch. He attended college at Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas graduating in 1973. He obtained his doctorate of veterinary medicine from Colorado State University in 1977. While he was attending veterinary school in Colorado he worked at Creek View Veterinary Clinic during the summers with Dr. Larry Waldrip and Dr. Gary Brotze. Upon graduation he became a veterinary associate at the clinic, becoming a full time partner in 1979. He has been here in New Braunfels and at the clinic ever since.
Dr. Doherty has four children and four grandchildren.
He and his wife, Ginger, are very involved in community affairs such as the New Braunfels Downtown Rotary, the Chamber of Commerce, the Wurstfest Association and the Texas Tech Alumni Association. In 2009-2010 he served as the President of the Texas Academy of Veterinary Practice.
Dr. Doherty has two dogs (Duchess and Duke) and one cat named Beno.
